WEST HAVEN, CT — An 83-year-old woman has died after a fire tore through a house on Malcolm Road in West Haven's Allingtown section early Saturday, Oct. 10. Fire Chief Michael Terenzio of the city's Allingtown fire department told FOX61 she died at a hospital Sunday; a city official confirmed her death Monday afternoon. A man found outside the home was also hospitalized.
Crews Found Both Residents at the Home
A neighbor called in the fire around 3:20 a.m., and firefighters arrived to find heavy flames rapidly consuming the house, NBC Connecticut reported.
Crews found the man outside, dazed from smoke inhalation. Searching inside, they found the woman unconscious about 12 feet in, removed her from the building and gave her medical treatment. The two were the only people in the home, Terenzio told FOX61.
NBC Connecticut reported that both had serious to critical injuries; one was taken to the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center and the other to Yale New Haven Hospital. Terenzio said the man is stable, FOX61 reported. No firefighters were hurt.
Firefighters had the flames under control within about 25 minutes, Terenzio said.
