Free Food in West Haven: Food Pantries, Free Meals and Where to Get Help

WHEAT's walk-in pantry, the meals at First Congregational, Foodshare's mobile pantry, pantry boxes, and delivery for people who cannot get out

Volunteers pass canned food into boxes at a food drive

West Haven has a food pantry where people pick their own groceries without showing an ID, free meals at First Congregational Church on the Green every Monday and Tuesday and on two Wednesdays a month, two Connecticut Foodshare mobile pantry stops, and three pantry boxes that never close. The places below were confirmed on their own websites or on Foodshare's calendar, and a shorter list near the end names others to call first. For anything this guide does not cover, dial 2-1-1, the state's information and referral line.

Last checked: October 6, 2026. Hours and programs change, so call ahead when you can.

Before you go

  • WHEAT, the city's walk-in pantry, asks for no ID or documents. The first time, people fill out a short form with their name, age, town, household size, and yearly income.
  • Gateway Christian Fellowship's monthly pantry is a drive-through.
  • Bring bags to the mobile pantry. Foodshare suggests a bag, a box, or a rolling cart.
  • Several dinners and pantries in the city appear only on the city's January 2025 food guide or on another church's page. They are in the call-first list near the end.
  • Foodshare cancels the mobile pantry when West Haven's schools close for the full day because of weather.

Food pantries

WHEAT, the West Haven Emergency Assistance Taskforce, is set up for shopping: each household chooses its own food once a month. Gateway Christian Fellowship hands out groceries from a drive-through one Wednesday a month.

Connecticut Foodshare mobile pantry

At both stops the food is handed out in the open air, set up like a farmers market. No ID is needed and nobody asks questions. Only people 16 or older who come in person can pick up, and each person leaves with about 20 pounds of food on average. Bring bags, a box, or a rolling cart, and come close to the start time.

  • Vertical Church, 225 Meloy Road: every other Thursday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. (October 15 and 29, November 12, December 10 and 24; no stop on Thanksgiving, November 26)

To get the schedule and cancellation notices by text, send FOODSHARE to 85511 (COMIDA for Spanish). The full calendar is online.

FISH grocery delivery

Once a month, volunteers with FISH, a program of New Reach, carry groceries to the doors of people in Greater New Haven who cannot get to a pantry because of age, illness, a disability, or another barrier. Most are older adults, people with disabilities, and families in hard circumstances. New Reach has not posted how to sign up or which towns FISH covers; call 203-492-4866 or see newreach.org.

Meals for older adults

The West Haven Senior Center, 201 Noble St., serves a daily lunch but has not posted the time or who may come, so call 203-937-3507. The center is open weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the city's Elderly Services department serves residents 55 and older. The center also lists farmers market vouchers among its services.

LifeBridge Community Services delivers a weekday meal to people 60 and older who cannot leave home. Its community cafés serve lunch to people 60 and older who register and reserve a seat the day before, for a suggested $3 donation, and its July 2025 café list includes two in West Haven: the West Haven Senior Center and the John Prete Senior Center, 1187 Campbell Ave. Call 203-752-9919 or see seniormealsct.org.

The Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut can buy $100 worth of groceries, one time, for a homebound older adult whose income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Call 203-785-8533 and choose option 3.

Students and school meals

West Haven High School keeps a food and hygiene pantry for its students. Nine West Haven public schools were on the state's 2025–26 list of schools where every student eats breakfast and lunch free under the Community Eligibility Provision; the state has not posted the 2026–27 list. Families in other schools can apply for free or reduced-price meals at any time in the school year, and a child whose household gets SNAP, TFA, HUSKY A, or Summer EBT benefits may qualify without applying.

Also in West Haven: call before you go

These programs are on the city's January 2025 food assistance guide or on another church's page, but not on a current page of their own, so this guide leaves out their days and hours.

  • Project HOPE soup kitchen, First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 52 George St., at Campbell Avenue (no phone number is published)
  • Agape (Love) Meal, First & Wesley United Methodist Church, at 89 Center Street; call 203-933-8795
  • West Haven Elks Lodge community dinner, 265 Main St. (no phone number is published)
  • Dream Center of West Haven food distribution, a project of Vertical Church, 263 Center St., 203-934-9673
  • St. Paul's Church food pantry, 898 First Ave., 203-933-1024

Thanksgiving and holiday help

Gateway Christian Fellowship packs and hands out Thanksgiving baskets on Wednesday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 129 Bull Hill Lane. It has not posted how a family gets on the list; call 203-934-0880. In December, Gateway gives a gift to each child in need among the families it knows through its pantry, its church, and the community, along with a grocery store gift card for a Christmas meal.

WHEAT hopes to feed 300 families at Thanksgiving this year and has not said how to sign up. Call 203-931-9877.

Foodshare's Vertical Church stop skips Thanksgiving Day. The last mobile pantry stops before the holiday are Thursday, November 12, at Vertical Church and Tuesday, November 17, at the Errera Center.

SNAP, WIC and other help

SNAP, the monthly grocery benefit once called food stamps, comes on an EBT card. Apply online; by phone at 1-855-626-6632, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; or in person at any Department of Social Services Resource Center, including the one in New Haven at 50 Humphrey St., open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The department answers within 30 days, and within seven days for a household in an emergency, such as one with less than $150 a month in income and less than $100 in the bank. Its chart as of October 1, 2026, allows a household of one up to $2,660 a month before taxes and a household of four up to $5,500, a little more when someone in the home is 60 or older or has a disability.

Free help with the application comes from End Hunger CT!, 866-974-7627; Connecticut Foodshare's SNAP team, 860-856-4357, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in English and Spanish; and the Community Action Agency of New Haven, which serves West Haven, at 419 Whalley Ave. in New Haven, 203-387-7700.

WIC adds groceries for pregnant women, new mothers, babies, and children until their fifth birthday; fathers, grandparents, and foster parents can apply for a child. A household on SNAP, TFA, or HUSKY already meets the income rule. West Haven's WIC office is at Yale New Haven Hospital, 500 Elm St., 203-789-3563. To begin, fill out the state's interest form or call 1-800-741-2142.

Dial 2-1-1 or search 211ct.org for pantries, meals, and senior programs by town. Each listing there shows when it was last updated.

How to help

  • WHEAT's most-needed list: peanut butter and jelly, cereal, rice, tuna, bread, shelf-stable milk, applesauce, and canned corn, peas, potatoes, and pears. For Thanksgiving, it is asking for $20 ShopRite or Aldi gift cards, which let clients pick their own meat, along with stuffing, gravy, rice, canned yams, boxed macaroni, canned carrots and corn, and cake or brownie mix. Money can go through its Thanksgiving drive page. Volunteers help with pantry work, reception, office tasks, and grocery pickups; email info@wheatpantry.org.
  • Church of the Holy Spirit, at 28 Church St., is gathering gift cards for WHEAT's Thanksgiving drive through October 23.
  • Gateway Christian Fellowship collects for its pantry in the church's Atrium: breakfast food such as cereal, instant oatmeal, pancake mix, and syrup; peanut butter and jelly; pasta with jarred sauce; white rice; macaroni and cheese; beef, chicken, or hot dogs; canned beans, vegetables, ravioli, and spaghetti; and snacks for children. Starting October 25 it also takes Thanksgiving basket donations in the Atrium, Sundays through Thursdays. Its page gives both November 8 and November 15 as the last day, so call 203-934-0880, the same number for volunteers who want to pack baskets or load cars.
  • Purple Pantry Boxes can use only factory-sealed, shelf-stable food: nothing opened or repacked in a zip-top bag or reusable container, and nothing that needs a refrigerator or freezer. The group is all volunteers and takes money by Venmo at @purplepantryboxes.
  • FISH needs volunteers to pack bags and drive delivery routes, most of all on weekday mornings and early afternoons. The interest form is on New Reach's site.
  • Church of the Holy Spirit also collects for the West Haven High School pantry: snacks; easy foods such as cereal, peanut butter and jelly, and canned spaghetti; and hygiene and laundry products. Its page has the details.
