Yale Divinity School Employee Shot in New Haven Carjacking Attempt
NEW HAVEN, CT — A Yale Divinity School employee was shot around 4 a.m. Tuesday during an attempted carjacking near Canner and St. Ronan streets, police said.
New Haven and Yale police said the 30-year-old East Haven man was parking for work when an armed suspect demanded his keys. The victim fought back, and the suspect shot him once during the struggle. The victim called 911, and the shooter ran from the scene.
WFSB reported that he arrived at Yale New Haven Hospital in stable condition. Yale said he was conscious at the scene. The intersection is off Yale's campus.
Police described the suspect as a man wearing all black with white stripes on the sleeves and a black ski mask. He remains at large. Detectives are reviewing footage from city and Yale cameras and hope the victim's Tesla captured evidence. New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli said the department was looking for video, including from the Tesla, and would work to increase visibility. Investigators also went door to door in the neighborhood Tuesday, looking for video.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker called the shooting an anomaly. "This is an anomaly, a robbery that appears to have gone bad," he said, adding that the city has its lowest gun violence numbers in roughly 15 years.
The Foote School had a two-hour delay Tuesday because of police activity and street closures. Students near the Divinity School said the shooting was alarming, and one said carjackings have happened in the area before.
Yale said it will increase security in its own parking areas "to support the safety and well-being of our community." NBC Connecticut reported that police added patrols in the area. Yale's statement said the incident appears to have been an attempted robbery.
WFSB reported that anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact detectives at 203-946-6304 or leave an anonymous tip at 866-888-8477.
