New Haven Union Station Set for $24.8M Modernization, New Retail
State-funded renovations will update the station interior, exterior and parking garage while vendors are sought for new food and retail spaces.

New Haven Union Station Renovations
Connecticut officials and New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker announced Monday that major renovations are getting underway at New Haven Union Station, including exterior repairs, interior improvements and new retail and food service opportunities. The station serves nearly four million passengers annually.
The Union Station Partnership, a collaboration between the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the City of New Haven, is advancing the work. The projects are being fully funded by the state.
Exterior repairs now underway at the station and parking garage total $9.1 million. Interior improvements are anticipated to cost $15.7 million, bringing the announced renovation total to $24.8 million.
“New Haven Union Station is an important link in Connecticut’s transportation network, and we are focused on making it a world-class transit facility,” Gov. Ned Lamont said in a state announcement. “We are modernizing this historic station to create a more welcoming and comfortable experience for riders and encourage more people to choose rail.”
Renovations Will Change Restrooms, Lighting and Passenger Areas
The exterior work includes repointing brick and repairing concrete at the station and parking garage. Interior renovations will include updated restrooms and hallways, new flooring and ceiling tiles, LED lighting, and upgraded utility connections.
The main passenger areas targeted for improvements include the atrium and the space at the bottom of the escalators leading to the pedestrian tunnel. Plans also call for additional family restrooms, a new wellness room, upgraded security and ticketing spaces, and renovated office and rail administration areas.
The redesigned station is expected to include expanded seating throughout the atrium and mezzanine. Plans also include a central atrium bar and café and a bar and lounge area on the mezzanine level.
Mayor Elicker said the project is intended to make the station a more welcoming transit hub and destination while supporting rail ridership and transit-oriented development in New Haven.
Vendors Can Apply to Operate New Station Businesses
The state and city are seeking information from retail and food service vendors interested in operating inside the station. Through the process, selected vendors and tenants will have the opportunity to design and build out their own spaces.
The request for interest seeks a mix of businesses serving rail passengers and the surrounding community. Vendor applications are due Jan. 29, 2027.
Platform Project Is Separate and Still in Design
The renovations announced Monday are separate from a proposed future project involving the station’s platforms, platform canopy, and pedestrian tunnel. That project is currently in the design phase.
State Project 0301-0522 calls for replacing the existing high-level platforms and installing a canopy system providing full coverage for passengers on the platforms. It also includes supporting rail, power, and station utility improvements, along with upgrades to the pedestrian tunnel, stairs, and elevators.
The platform project has an estimated construction cost of approximately $402 million and is anticipated to use federal and state funds. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2029, subject to funding availability and permit approvals. State records say right-of-way impacts are not expected.
A hybrid public informational meeting for that project was held April 14, 2026, at the Ives Main Library in New Haven. The public comment period has closed, though questions and concerns may still be submitted to the project team.
Construction Timeline Extends Through 2029
Exterior repairs and Phase I interior work at Union Station are expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Phase II interior work is expected during the second half of 2028, while parking garage repairs are scheduled for 2029.
A feasibility study is also underway to determine which portions of the station’s heating and cooling systems could connect to the Union Station Area Thermal Energy Network. The geothermal network is being developed by the City of New Haven to provide energy to the station and adjacent housing under development by Elm City Communities.
