New Haven Driver Convicted of Manslaughter in 2022 Crash

NEW HAVEN, CT — A jury in New Haven Superior Court has convicted a 54-year-old New Haven man of manslaughter in a March 2022 crash that killed a 28-year-old West Haven man, State's Attorney John P. Doyle Jr. announced, Patch reported Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The jury found him guilty on three counts: driving under the influence, misconduct with a motor vehicle, and second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle.

What the Trial Showed

According to evidence presented at trial, Doyle said, the man was driving a 2014 Nissan Murano under the influence at about 1 a.m. on March 11, 2022, when it struck a Toyota driven by the West Haven man at Middletown Avenue and Flint Street. The Toyota's driver was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and pronounced dead, WTNH reported.

Doyle said the driver's blood alcohol content was 0.11 when his car hit the Toyota. Connecticut's legal limit is 0.08. "The event data recorder retrieved from the vehicle the defendant was operating that night showed he was traveling at speeds of 86 mph 2 ½ seconds before the crash," Doyle said.

Sentencing Set for Dec. 22

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 22. New Haven police Lt. Savannah Smith investigated the case, and Senior Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Lindade prosecuted it with help from an inspector, an investigator and a victim advocate.
