Everything Bridgeport residents need to know about trash collection, recycling, and disposal
Overview
Bridgeport provides municipal curbside trash and recycling collection for residents through its Department of Public Facilities. The city operates separate Sanitation and Recycling Divisions and also maintains a Transfer Station for additional waste disposal needs.
Curbside Trash Collection
The City of Bridgeport provides weekly curbside trash collection.
- Containers: Green toters provided by the city
- Pickup day: Varies by street/neighborhood — check the Sanitation Pickup Schedule on the city website or call 203-576-7232
- Placement: Green toter must be placed curbside 24 hours before scheduled pickup and returned to your property within 24 hours after collection
- Time: All garbage must be out by 6:00 AM on collection day
Curbside Recycling
Recycling is collected bi-weekly (every other week) on the same day as trash.
- Containers: Blue toters provided by the city
- Type: Single-stream recycling — all recyclables go loose in one toter (not bagged)
- Extra recycling cans: Available at no cost from Public Facilities at 203-576-7124
Accepted Recyclables
- Paper: newspaper, mail, office paper, paper bags
- Aluminum: cans, foil, pans
- Cardboard: flattened boxes, beverage cartons
- Plastic: bottles, jars, tubs, jugs (HDPE and PETE)
- Glass: bottles and jars
- All items must be rinsed clean of food debris
NOT Accepted in Recycling
- Plastic bags, film, bubble wrap, packing tape
- Plastic utensils, cups, plates
- Styrofoam
- Window/pane glass, lightbulbs
- Aerosol cans, bottle caps
- Batteries, propane tanks
- Wax-coated paper, food-soiled cardboard
- Chemical containers, hazardous materials
Bulk & Large Item Pickup
The city has run a seasonal Household Bulk Pickup Program in past years. The 2024 program has ended; verify 2026 availability with Public Facilities.
- When active: Bulk collections run Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM, organized by district
- How to arrange: Call 203-576-3950, Monday–Friday 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
- Accepted (when active): Furniture, mattresses/box springs, chairs, sofas, carpeting, fencing/decking (4-foot max), appliances (refrigerators/freezers with doors removed), large metal items (4-foot max)
Important: When the bulk pickup program is not running, do NOT leave bulk items curbside — this may result in fines. Bring items to the Transfer Station instead.
Transfer Station / Drop-Off
Bridgeport Transfer Station
- Address: 475 Asylum Street, Bridgeport, CT 06610
- Hours: Monday–Saturday, 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (year-round)
- Access: Bridgeport residents. Non-residents who own property in Bridgeport must provide proof of property ownership and are limited to one trip per day.
- All loads must be covered and secured
Accepted at the Transfer Station
- Household refuse
- Wood and brush (up to 4 feet long, bundled or loose/covered)
- Small debris, lawn clippings, leaves (in paper bags only, boxed, or tied)
- Separated metals
- Wood doors and mattresses (must be cut in half)
- Up to 2 tires per visit
- Clean oil and antifreeze (uncontaminated — give to Weigh Master)
- Recyclables (placed per Weigh Master's direction)
NOT Accepted
- Chemicals, medical waste, toxic/hazardous materials
- Construction debris, cabinets, concrete
- Paint products, sheetrock, roofing shingles
- Aluminum/vinyl siding
- Toilets, sinks, plumbing fixtures
Yard Waste / Leaf Collection
Yard waste and leaf collection follows your recycling day schedule (bi-weekly).
- Placement: Curbside by 6:00 AM on collection day
- Bag requirements: Brown paper leaf bags only (biodegradable). Also accepted in garbage cans with no lids or open-top cardboard boxes.
- Weight limit: 25 lbs per bag, 50 lbs per can
- Do NOT use plastic bags
Brush Requirements
- Less than 4 feet in length, 6 inches or less in diameter
- Must be tied in bundles, maximum 50 lbs per bundle
NOT Collected
- Plastic bags of any kind, loose piles of brush or leaves
- Rocks, soil, sand, logs and stumps (bring to Transfer Station)

Christmas Tree Collection
Typically runs early January through early February. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, and plastic bags. Place curbside on recycling day by 6:00 AM.
Holiday Schedule
Trash and recycling generally remain on schedule for most holidays. Brown bag (yard waste) collection is suspended on the holiday with a one-day delay for the rest of that week. The Transfer Station is closed on major holidays (New Year's Day, Presidents' Day, Christmas, etc.) and reopens the following day. The city posts specific holiday schedules each year.
Toter Requests
- Damaged toters: Request repair or replacement via SeeClickFix app or by contacting supervisors
- Lost/stolen toters: Must file a police report with Bridgeport Police (203-576-7671). A full police report is required.
- New homeowners: Can request toters within 12 months of closing by submitting closing statement or deed
- Delivery time: Within 2 weeks
