Things to Do This Weekend: Apple Harvest, Oktoberfest, Fiesta Latina

Southington’s Apple Harvest Festival returns for its second weekend, while New Haven hosts the Fiesta Latina street festival and a bird migration festival at Lighthouse Point Park. Guilford’s Oktoberfest and a family fun expo in New Haven round out the weekend.

Southington Apple Harvest Festival

The 57th annual festival spans two weekends on the Southington Town Green. The town lists family activities, food, live entertainment, vendors and shopping.

  • When: Friday, Oct. 9, 5-9 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., with the arts and crafts show 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 11, noon-5 p.m. The town's shuttle bus runs Saturday and Sunday, not Friday.

Junta Fiesta Latina Street Festival

Junta and the Yale Peabody Museum are turning Grand Avenue into a street festival with live music, salsa, cumbia and merengue. The event also includes local vendors, food trucks, youth booths and kids’ activities.

Edelweiss Lodge Oktoberfest

The afternoon features German-Austrian-Tyrolean music, Schuhplattler dancing, games and contests. The program includes live music from The Austrian Boys, a strolling accordionist and activities for children.

Hamden P.A.L. Back to School Carnival

The carnival brings rides, food and games to Town Center Park. The organizer says hours are weather permitting and may change.

  • When: Friday, Oct. 9, through Monday, Oct. 12. 6-10 p.m. Friday; 2-10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 2-6 p.m. Monday
  • Where: Town Center Park, 2761 Dixwell Ave., Hamden
  • Cost: $1.50 per ride ticket; an unlimited-ride wristband is $35 a person for one day ($30 if bought ahead)

New Haven Fall Migration Festival

The family-friendly festival celebrates bird migration with a hawk watch, educational and kids’ activities, lighthouse tours and guided bird walks. The schedule also includes a live raptor show and food and beverage vendors.

Connecticut Paid Leave Family Fun Expo

The expo offers crafts, face painting, balloon twisting and activities for children. Families can meet community partners and take part in a scavenger hunt for a free scoop of ice cream, and the first 100 children through the door get a Halloween goody bag.
