Shore Line East Adds 4 Weekday Trains Between New Haven and New London

NEW HAVEN, CT — Shore Line East riders have four more weekday trains to choose from as of Monday, Oct. 5. The Connecticut Department of Transportation added two afternoon and evening runs in each direction between New Haven and New London, and all four stop at every station on the line, Branford and Guilford included.

CTDOT says the new runs fill long gaps in the weekday timetable. Gov. Ned Lamont, who announced the trains Sept. 11, said the old schedule's holes "made it harder to get to work, appointments, and home to families and friends."

The new trains

From New Haven Union Station to New London:

  • Train 1628 leaves at 2:55 p.m. and is due in New London at 4:05 p.m.
  • Train 1640 leaves at 5:55 p.m. and is due in New London at 7:05 p.m.

From New London to New Haven Union Station:

  • Train 1683 leaves at 4:40 p.m. and is due in New Haven at 5:49 p.m.
  • Train 1693 leaves at 7:28 p.m. and is due in New Haven at 8:37 p.m.

Train 1640 also gives commuters coming home from New York a new connection: it meets Metro-North's Super Express Train 3542 at Union Station. Riders can catch the express at 4:11 p.m. in New York City or at 4:44 p.m. in Stamford, according to CTDOT.

Why the schedule changed

CTDOT says the added trains answer what riders reported in the Shore Line East customer satisfaction survey and in conversations with train crews and customer service staff.

“Shore Line East customers told us where they needed better service, and we took that feedback seriously,” Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said in the governor's announcement.

The trains are paid for with $3 million more for CTDOT in the state budget adjustments lawmakers approved this year and Lamont signed, CT News Junkie reported. CTDOT asks riders to check the updated timetable at ShoreLineEast.com before they travel.
