North Branford Rotary Led the Kenya Library Project

NORTH BRANFORD, CT — Eight small libraries now serve remote village schools in Kenya’s Central Highlands, set up with two Rotary grants in an effort led by the North Branford Rotary Club, according to an announcement Patch published Thursday, Sept. 24. More than 4,500 children are expected to benefit, the announcement said.

Rotary clubs in East Haven and Branford joined the effort, with North Branford serving as the lead club. The Rotary Foundation and Rotary District 7980 partnered on the project, and local Rotary clubs donated to it, according to the announcement.

Clubs From Across Connecticut Joined the Effort

The Rotary Club of Nanyuki, Kenya, served as the host club. Clubs from across Connecticut also took part, among them those in Bridgeport, Guilford, Hamden, New Haven, Orange and West Haven, the announcement said.

Eight Libraries Serve Remote Kenyan Communities

The eight libraries sit in village schools in a remote Maasai conservancy in Kenya’s Central Highlands. The Il Ngwesi Community Resource Center, the main library hub in Chumvi, Kenya, oversees them.

Kenyan Health Care Initiatives, a Connecticut nonprofit, built the hub and outfitted it with books, computers, shelves, other equipment and a playground, the announcement said. Adults in the surrounding communities are expected to benefit from the libraries as well as the children.
