Christopher Root, 29, of Old Saybrook was found unresponsive in his cell; facility placed on lockdown as DOC and State Police investigate
Inmate Found Unresponsive at Suffield Prison, Dies Shortly After Midnight
A 29-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield and pronounced dead in the early hours of March 12, 2026, according to the Connecticut Department of Correction and reporting by CT News Junkie and NBC Connecticut.
Christopher Root, of Old Saybrook, was discovered by staff after his cellmate alerted them to his condition shortly after midnight. Staff found Root had apparently vomited. Medical personnel immediately began life-saving measures but were unable to revive him. Root was pronounced dead at 1:18 a.m.
The facility was placed on lockdown following Root's death.
Charges and Detention Status
Root was being held at MacDougall-Walker on a charge of first-degree strangulation stemming from an August 2025 arrest. He was held on a bond of $1.5 million at the time of his death.
First-degree strangulation is a Class C felony under Connecticut law, carrying a potential sentence of up to ten years. Root had been incarcerated at MacDougall-Walker pending disposition of those charges.
MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution is a medium-security facility in Suffield operated by the Connecticut Department of Correction. It houses adult male inmates from across the state.
Investigation by DOC and State Police
The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are jointly investigating the circumstances of Root's death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Results from the medical examiner's office can take weeks to months depending on autopsy findings and toxicology results.
As of publication, no preliminary findings or official cause of death have been released by any investigating agency. The DOC has not issued a public statement beyond confirming the death and the ongoing investigation.
Context: Prior In-Custody Deaths at Connecticut Facilities
Root's death occurred approximately one month after three incarcerated individuals died in Connecticut state custody within the same week, including at least one at MacDougall-Walker itself, according to CT News Junkie. Those deaths also prompted investigations by the Department of Correction.
In-custody deaths in Connecticut trigger mandatory review by the DOC Security Division in coordination with the Connecticut State Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The agencies collectively assess whether the death resulted from natural causes, medical emergency, violence, or other factors, with findings ultimately reported publicly through the medical examiner's office.
Connecticut's prison system has faced ongoing legislative scrutiny over conditions including medical care, mental health response, and staffing levels. State lawmakers have periodically called for increased oversight of the DOC following in-custody deaths, though no specific legislative action has been announced in connection with Root's death as of publication.
Facility and Investigation Status
MacDougall-Walker is located at 1153 East Street South in Suffield, in Hartford County. The facility's lockdown status following Root's death is consistent with DOC protocol for in-custody deaths, allowing investigators to secure the scene and conduct initial inquiries.
No additional information on the circumstances leading to Root's death — including whether there were signs of injury, medical distress, or other factors — has been released by the Department of Correction or State Police. The investigation is ongoing.
