NEW HAVEN, CT — CTtransit’s new 50% fare discount for veterans and riders ages 5 through 18 took effect Thursday, Oct. 1, on local bus and CTfastrak services statewide. A two-hour fare is now 85 cents, and youth riders can buy a 31-day pass for the first time. Riders 5 through 18 had received a 20% discount before the change. The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced the new structure Sept. 25.

Who Qualifies and What Riders Pay

The discount applies to local service and CTfastrak, but not Express service. Riders ages 65 and older and eligible customers with disabilities also receive reduced fares.

The two-hour fare is 85 cents, an all-day fare is $1.70, a 10-ride pass costs $7.65 and a 31-day pass costs $30.60. Riders can buy two-hour and all-day fares on board or through the Token Transit or Transit apps. Prepaid paper passes are available for 10-ride and 31-day passes.

Youth riders should show a student ID when boarding to receive the discount. For Token Transit and sales-outlet purchases, youth riders do not need to show ID.

Veterans can show a Veterans Reduced Fare Transit Photo ID, a Connecticut driver's license or non-driver ID with a veteran designation, or a Veteran's Health ID card. The state also offers an online application for a reduced-fare photo ID.

"By establishing a consistent 50% discount, we are making CTtransit services across Connecticut easier to access and use," Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said in the department's announcement.

The youth discount is separate from the state program that lets Connecticut public high school students ride buses for free, NBC Connecticut reported.
