Mobile Speed Cameras Set for Wallingford's I-91 Work Zone

WALLINGFORD, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation plans to run mobile speed cameras in the I-91 work zone in Wallingford for about two weeks of roadway maintenance, starting the week of Oct. 18, Patch reported.

The cameras belong to Know the Zone, the state's speed camera program for highway work zones. The department says the goal is to "reduce speeding, crashes, injuries, and fatalities in work zones."

How the Cameras Work

The system flags vehicles going 10 mph or more over the posted work-zone limit, according to the department's program page. Sworn police officers review each case, and any warning or ticket is mailed to the vehicle's registered owner. Signs go up about 1,000 feet and 500 feet before a camera zone.

A Warning First, Then $75

A first offense brings a written warning and no fine. Another violation within a year of the last one carries a $75 fine, and so does a speed of 85 mph or more, even on a first offense, the department says. A violation more than a year after the previous one counts as a first offense again.

The state opened the program with a warning period and limited deployments on June 1 and began full deployments July 6, according to the department.
