Board of Alders
NEW HAVEN, CT — The Board of Alders met Tuesday, September 22, at 7 p.m. in its chamber on the second floor of 165 Church Street. The unanimous-consent list carried an order backing an event tied to a union and community campaign and closing streets for it (LM-2026-0407), a Peace Commission request to accept a sculpture donated by Mr. and Mrs. Bartow, the tax collector’s refund order and several orders on individual motor vehicle tax accounts.
The largest figure on the agenda sat among the first readings: an amendment to appropriating ordinance #3 for fiscal 2026–27 that would authorize general obligation bonds and appropriate $27,000,000 to what the agenda calls “the litigation self-insurance fund for the city’s settlement of Horn v. City of New Haven, et al and Jackson v. City of New Haven, et al,” reported favorably by the Finance Committee. Also listed for first reading: a 10-year lease from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2036, with Christian Community Action Inc. for 124 Sylvan Avenue; a $235,000 increase to the outside legal services agreement with Howd & Ludorf LLC for fiscal 2025–26; a $37,451 transfer into labor relations salaries in the mayor’s office; and a fee schedule update for the Ralph Walker Ice Rink at Blake Field. Second readings listed appointments to the Affordable Housing Commission, the City Plan Commission, the Civil Service Board, the Fair Rent Commission and the Board of Fire Commissioners, among others.
Health & Human Services Committee
The committee met Thursday, September 24, at 6 p.m. in the same chamber to act on one item, LM-2026-0408, which the agenda titles “Resolution of the New Haven Board of Alders urging Yale University to defend its institutional autonomy and not enter into a settlement with the Trump administration.” The agenda says the resolution is on file in the Office of Legislative Services and that written comment could be sent to publictestimony@newhavenct.gov before 2 p.m. on the day of the meeting.
