Middletown Homicide Suspect Held on $3 Million Bond After Hartford Shootout

A welcome sign in Middletown, Connecticut

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A 43-year-old Middletown man is charged with murder in the death of a woman found in her apartment Tuesday, Sept. 29, and was ordered held on $3 million bond after a police chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire in Hartford, according to Middletown police and CTPost.

Police Link Middletown Homicide to Hartford Shooting

Middletown officers and Westfield Fire personnel went to Town Colony Drive at about 3:23 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, after a call reporting a woman down inside her apartment, according to the city's news release. Officers found her dead, and detectives opened an investigation into what the department first called a suspicious death. Police said the woman had a gunshot wound and other injuries. They have not released her name.

Detectives quickly identified a suspect and developed probable cause for his arrest, the department said Sept. 30. According to NBC Connecticut's account of police statements, the events that ended in Hartford began with a regional radio broadcast from Middletown police about a vehicle tied to the homicide.

Pursuit Ended With Gunfire in Hartford

A license plate reader picked up the vehicle, investigators said, and officers went to New Park Avenue in West Hartford, where they found it and tried to pull it over. The driver fled, and a pursuit followed.

Officers put down tire-deflation devices, but the vehicle kept going onto Flatbush Avenue in Hartford before it stopped. The suspect and West Hartford officers then exchanged gunfire, NBC Connecticut reported.

Two people were hit, the suspect and a juvenile, and both were expected to recover, police said. An arrest report does not say how the juvenile is connected to the suspect, CTPost reported. No West Hartford officer was hurt. Investigators from the Connecticut Office of the Inspector General went to the Hartford scene to review the officers' use of force.

Suspect Held on $3 Million Bond

The charges are murder, unlawful discharge of a firearm and second-degree stalking, Middletown police said. At his arraignment Wednesday afternoon in Superior Court in Middletown, prosecutor Jason Germain told the judge the man had "stalked, tracked and done an execution" of the victim, CTPost reported.

Judge Patrick Ring set bond at $3 million, above the $2 million the bail commissioner and the prosecutor had suggested, citing the nature of the crime, the risk to the public and the shootout that followed. If the man posts bond, he must wear a GPS monitor, surrender his passport and stay under house arrest, the judge said.

Middletown Police Say There Is No Immediate Threat

The department has called the case isolated and said the public faced no immediate threat. Anyone with information can reach the Middletown Police Major Investigations Unit at 860-638-4140.
