Cheshire Government Roundup: Highland Avenue Plans, Energy Projects

CHESHIRE, CT — Cheshire's Planning and Zoning Commission holds a public hearing Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Room 207/209 of Town Hall, 84 South Main St., on a special permit change for 1721 and 1755 Highland Ave., followed by its regular meeting.

Planning and Zoning Commission

The regular meeting's agenda lists a site plan for renovations at 1123 Highland Ave., the acceptance of Stone Bridge Court as a town road and a request to release a bond for 551 W. Johnson Ave. Under a 65-day extension, the hearing on the Highland Avenue special permit must close by Dec. 23.

Energy Commission

The Energy Commission also meets Monday at 7 p.m., in Room 210. Its agenda includes a proposal for fuel cells at Cheshire High School and the wastewater treatment plant and solar panels on six schools, the new boilers at police headquarters, a heat emergency plan and better cooling centers, and a look back at the Fall Festival.

Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission

At its Tuesday, Oct. 20, meeting, the commission heard from an engineer for Koopman Lumber on a site plan for vacant land on Highland Avenue. He told members the plan would disturb less wetland along Highland Avenue than a crossing the commission approved in 2021, an approval that is still valid. Commissioners agreed no public hearing was needed and talked about walking the site individually, the minutes say.

Water Pollution Control Authority

The authority's Thursday, Oct. 22, agenda listed two sewer feasibility applications, from Viron Rondo Osteria (an estimated 10,000 gallons a day) and Koopman Lumber (an estimated 3,500 gallons a day), and a review of 2027 sewer use rates with a public hearing to be scheduled. Minutes had not been posted as of Friday, Oct. 23.

Public Building Commission

The commission's Wednesday, Oct. 21, agenda reported the primary work on the town pool's new roof done, with a final inspection still to come, and the new police department boilers running. Prisoner cell renovations and improvements to the Harmon Leonard Jr. Youth Center were waiting on Town Council action, the agenda said.

The Next Generation School Building Committee was scheduled to meet Thursday, Oct. 22, with updates on Barnum and Norton schools, invoices and change orders. The Economic Development Commission's Tuesday, Oct. 20, agenda listed an introduction of Town Planner Hiram Peck, a schools update from Superintendent Jeff Solan and a new business, GiLi. The Performing and Fine Arts Committee's Oct. 20 agenda included the Halloween Bash at Mixville Park on Friday, Oct. 23, Winter Wonderland on Sunday, Dec. 6, and the Holiday Stroll at the Factory on Sunday, Dec. 13.
