Overview
North Branford enforces a 24-hour parking ban following any snowstorm of 3 inches or more. The ban prohibits parking on all public highways except on specifically designated streets. The fine is $55, doubling to $110 if not paid within 7 days.
How the Snow Emergency Is Declared
A parking ban is declared under Town Code Section 220-8 when a snowstorm of 3 inches or more occurs. The Traffic Authority or Chief of Police is authorized to suspend parking regulations and prohibit parking temporarily.
Parking Rules During a Snow Emergency
Complete prohibition on public highway parking for 24 hours following a 3+ inch snowstorm, except on streets specifically designated by the Traffic Authority with appropriate signage.
Even on designated streets, vehicles must be moved within 12 hours after the storm to allow snow and ice removal.
Streets Removed from Permitted Parking
The following streets have been eliminated from the permitted-emergency-parking list — no parking is allowed on these streets:
- Youngs Apple Orchard Road
- Indian Hill Road
- Woodland Drive
- Ledgewood Drive
- Evergreen Drive
- Bailey Drive (lower section)
- Clear Lake Road
Fines & Towing
- Fine: $55 (Group 5 violation)
- Late penalty: If not paid within 7 days, a penalty equal to the fine becomes due — effectively $110 total
- Towing: Any vehicle in violation may be tagged and towed by the North Branford Police Department. The owner is liable for all towing and storage charges. The towing cost constitutes a lien on the vehicle.
Where to Park During a Ban
The Traffic Authority designates certain areas of public highways (marked with appropriate signs) where on-street parking is permitted during or following snowstorm conditions. Check for posted signs in your area.
