Woman Shot in Arm at Howard Avenue Apartment; New Haven Man Faces Felony Charges
A 37-year-old woman was shot in the arm at an apartment on Howard Avenue in New Haven late Friday night, and a 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the incident.
Officers responded to a welfare check at approximately 10:46 p.m. on March 14, 2026, on Howard Avenue. The woman was found with a gunshot wound to the arm and transported to a hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
New Haven Man Charged with Assault, Illegal Firearm Possession
Xavion Tyrek Battle, 29, was arrested at 550 Howard Avenue and faces four charges arising from the incident:
- Assault in the First Degree
- Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm
- Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree
- Illegal Possession of a Large Capacity Magazine
Battle's arrest was documented in the New Haven Police Department's public arrests log. No further details about the circumstances of the shooting or evidence gathered at the scene were released by the department.
The charge of Illegal Possession of a Large Capacity Magazine indicates investigators believe a firearm with prohibited capacity was involved. Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, in addition to the Assault charge, suggests the shooting may have posed risks beyond the immediate victim.
New Haven Gun Violence in 2026
The March 14 shooting is the latest in a series of gun-related incidents in New Haven this year. Through March 11, the city had recorded 25 total gun-related incidents in 2026, compared to 18 during the same period in 2025. Of those 25 incidents, there have been five non-fatal shootings and no homicides, along with 20 shots-fired calls.
The New Haven Police Department has made arrests in four of the five shooting cases recorded to that point, an 80-percent arrest rate. Detectives were described as closing in on a suspect in the fifth case.
Acting Chief David Zannelli noted the pace of arrests across the recent shooting cases. "Multiple arrests in short order — they make it look easy, it doesn't mean it is," Zannelli said.
City officials have also taken steps to address a trend involving younger offenders. Three of the four arrests in recent shooting cases involved juveniles, prompting the city to expand school resource officer programs into middle schools serving grades 6 through 8.
Howard Avenue and the City's Response to Gun Violence
Howard Avenue is one of New Haven's major north-south corridors, passing through several residential and commercial neighborhoods on the city's west side. It has been the site of prior gun incidents in recent years, though authorities have not characterized this stretch as a specific area of concern in recent public statements.
New Haven police have stressed the importance of community cooperation in solving gun violence cases. Residents with information about the March 14 shooting or any other gun-related incident are encouraged to contact the New Haven Police Department.
Battle's next court appearance has not been publicly announced. Arraignment proceedings would typically take place in New Haven Superior Court, where formal charges would be read and bail addressed.
