A 16-year-old from Wallingford sustained life-threatening injuries in a crash on I-84 eastbound near Exit 13 in Newtown on February 21, 2026, after a Toyota RAV4 cut in front of the Honda Civic the teen was riding in and braked suddenly, according to Connecticut State Police.

The Honda Civic, driven by an 18-year-old from Meriden, lost control and struck a jersey barrier. The 16-year-old passenger was unresponsive at the scene, Patch reported, citing state police. All occupants of the Honda Civic were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4 fled the scene. Connecticut State Police later located the driver, identified as a 38-year-old man from New York, NBC Connecticut reported. He was not injured in the crash.

Connecticut State Police Troop K is leading the investigation into the hit-and-run. Authorities have not confirmed whether criminal charges have been filed against the 38-year-old driver who fled the scene.

According to state police accounts reported by Patch and NBC Connecticut, the Toyota RAV4 abruptly moved in front of the Honda Civic on I-84 eastbound and braked suddenly. The Civic driver, an 18-year-old from Meriden, lost control of the vehicle, which struck a jersey barrier.

The 16-year-old passenger from Wallingford sustained the most serious injuries and was unresponsive when first responders arrived. All occupants of the Civic were taken to Danbury Hospital. The conditions of the 18-year-old Meriden driver and any other occupants have not been publicly updated.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4 left the scene after the crash. State police located the individual and identified him as a 38-year-old man from New York. He was not injured and was not transported to a hospital.
