Shops at Yale Expanding Popular Food Crawl to Four Events in 2026

The Shops at Yale is expanding its Appetizer & Dessert Crawl series to four dates in 2026, up from three in recent years, as the downtown New Haven program looks to raise $14,000 for local nonprofits and attract new participants to the city's Chapel and Broadway districts.

The four crawl dates are Saturday, April 18; Saturday, May 2; Saturday, June 13; and Saturday, December 19. All events run from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and are self-guided tours through downtown New Haven's walkable shopping and restaurant district.

What Tickets Include

Tickets are $25 per person, plus processing fees. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. at the lower level of Barnes & Noble at The Yale Bookstore, 77 Broadway.

Ticket holders receive appetizer and dessert tastings from 12 participating restaurants, exclusive two-day shopping offers at locally owned boutiques and national retailers, a cotton tote bag, and free all-day parking at the 150 York Street Garage. The crawl is a self-paced experience; participants visit restaurants on their own schedule within the event window.

Tickets for individual events can be canceled up to seven days before each date, though service fees are nonrefundable.

May 2 Crawl Features Dog Adoption and Live Jazz

The May 2 event will include a special addition on Broadway Island from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. — a dog adoption event hosted in partnership with the Robin I. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter, along with live jazz and caricature artists. The outdoor component is designed to bring additional foot traffic and community activity to the downtown area.

Nonprofits to Benefit

The 2026 series will direct proceeds to four local organizations: United Way of Greater New Haven, CitySeed, the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, and the Robin I. Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter. The Shops at Yale has set a goal of donating $14,000 across the four events this year, with each organization receiving approximately $3,500.

Since the program launched in 2018, the Shops at Yale has donated more than $35,000 to New Haven nonprofits through the crawl series.

David DelVecchio, Director of Real Estate Asset Management at Yale University Properties, has described the event as a way to highlight New Haven's dining scene while strengthening community ties between the university-affiliated retail district and local residents and organizations.

New Haven's Downtown Dining Scene

The Chapel and Broadway districts host dozens of independent and chain restaurants within walking distance of each other, making the area well-suited for a self-guided food event. The crawl has grown in popularity in recent years, drawing participants from across the region seeking a structured way to sample the city's restaurant offerings.

New Haven has long been recognized as a regional dining destination, anchored by its well-known pizza establishments but extending into a broader range of cuisines concentrated in its compact downtown. The Appetizer & Dessert Crawl offers a lower-cost entry point — at $25 — compared to full dining experiences, which has contributed to its appeal as a community-oriented event.

All four 2026 crawls are currently open for ticket sales on the Shops at Yale website. The series is expected to take place rain or shine.
