Sacred Heart Academy Clinches Back-to-Back SCC Girls Basketball Titles in Hamden

Sacred Heart Academy claimed its second consecutive Southern Connecticut Conference girls basketball championship Monday night, defeating Sheehan 34-27 in a defensive grind at M&T Bank Arena on the Quinnipiac University campus in Hamden. The title — the program's fifth overall — extended the Sharks' streak to six straight appearances in the SCC final.

Freshman Finley Gunning led Sacred Heart with 10 points, including seven in the first half, while Mila Harmon added nine and senior Madelyn Burke contributed six. Sheehan's Megan Wresien was the game's leading scorer with 15 points, and Jenna Wresien chipped in eight for the Wildcats.

Sacred Heart entered the game at 19-2. Sheehan, appearing in its first-ever SCC championship game, finished the season 19-5.

Hamden Defense Carries the Sharks

"It shows that we can win in different ways," Sacred Heart head coach Jason Kirck said after the game, crediting his team's defensive adjustments throughout the postseason.

The Sharks held opponents to roughly 20 percent shooting in the championship — the lowest-scoring title game in league history. Burke, who served as the defensive anchor, put it plainly: "Most of our offense comes from our defense."

Gunning, who stepped up in the biggest game of her young career, credited the Sharks' attack. "Once we started getting to the hoop, we created more opportunities," she said.

Sheehan mounted a second-half comeback, cutting the deficit to five points with under five minutes remaining. But a three-point attempt that rolled in and out sealed the Wildcats' fate, and Sacred Heart held on to close out the win.

A Dominant Tournament Run

The Sharks rolled through the bracket en route to the title game, beating Lyman Hall 62-32 in the first round and Hillhouse 50-39 in the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal, Burke erupted for 20 points. The Sharks then dispatched West Haven 53-31 in the semifinals before facing Sheehan in the championship.

Sacred Heart had already beaten Sheehan during the regular season — completing a season sweep with Monday's title-game victory.

Five Titles, Six Finals

Monday's win gave Sacred Heart Academy five SCC championships in program history and a second straight conference title. The Sharks have now appeared in six consecutive SCC championship games, a run of sustained success that spans multiple senior classes.

For Sheehan, the Wildcats reached the SCC final for the first time in program history — a milestone even in defeat for a team that finished the year at 19-5.

Sacred Heart's title was secured at M&T Bank Arena on the Quinnipiac University campus, which hosted the championship game for the 2026 season.
