Route 15 Southbound Right Lane Closes Nightly in North Haven for Safety Upgrades

The Connecticut Department of Transportation began nightly right lane closures on Route 15 southbound on Sunday, March 1, 2026, as part of a safety improvement project to upgrade guiderails and install crash-absorbing attenuators in North Haven, Hamden, and New Haven.

The closures affect the right lane between Exit 58A and Exit 46, running nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, April 17, 2026. The lane reopens each morning for daytime travel. CTDOT first announced the project on Feb. 24.

CTDOT Replacing Guiderails and Attenuators Along North Haven Corridor

The project involves upgrading guiderails and installing new attenuators along multiple miles of the Route 15 southbound corridor spanning three towns. Guiderails are the metal barriers that line highway edges, designed to redirect vehicles back onto the roadway when a driver drifts off course. Attenuators are crash-absorbing systems placed in front of fixed roadside objects such as barrier ends, bridge supports, and highway gore points.

The attenuator systems are engineered to absorb and redirect the energy of a vehicle impact, reducing injury severity when a driver strikes a stationary object at highway speeds. The devices collapse on impact and can typically be reset or replaced after a collision, making them a standard component of modern highway safety infrastructure.

According to the CTDOT construction advisory, state troopers will be stationed on-site to guide motorists through the active work zone, supplemented by traffic control signing patterns marking the lane closure area. CTDOT cautioned that modifications or extensions to the project schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions.

Motorists are advised to maintain safe speeds when traveling through the construction area during overnight hours.

Wilbur Cross Parkway Carries Heavy North Haven Commuter Traffic

Route 15, known as the Wilbur Cross Parkway through the project area, is one of the region's most heavily traveled commuter routes. The parkway connects New Haven to North Haven, Hamden, Wallingford, and communities further north toward Meriden and Hartford, carrying thousands of vehicles daily through the affected stretch.

The project corridor between Exit 58A and Exit 46 passes through residential and commercial areas in all three towns. The Exit 58A interchange connects Route 15 to Interstate 91, one of Connecticut's primary north-south interstate highways. Exit 46 is located in New Haven near the southern end of the Wilbur Cross Parkway designation.

CTDOT scheduled the work during overnight hours to minimize impacts on daytime and peak-hour commuters. Late-night and early-morning travelers, including shift workers, delivery drivers, and emergency vehicles, should anticipate single-lane conditions through the corridor and allow additional travel time during the 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. closure window.

Project Follows Similar Route 15 Safety Work Completed in 2025

The current guiderail and attenuator installation is the second phase of safety improvement work CTDOT has undertaken on Route 15 southbound in the area. The first phase, which ran from July through October 2025, upgraded guiderails and attenuators from the Wallingford town line to Exit 63 in North Haven and Wallingford.

That earlier project was performed by Atlas Industrial Services under CTDOT contract DOT01730544CN, according to state records. CTDOT has not publicly identified the contractor for the current phase covering the stretch from Exit 58A to Exit 46.

Together, the two phases address guiderail and attenuator conditions along a substantial portion of Route 15 southbound, extending from Wallingford through North Haven, Hamden, and into New Haven. The combined work reflects CTDOT's ongoing effort to modernize aging safety infrastructure along one of the state's legacy parkway corridors.
