Nightly Closures Begin on Route 15 in Hamden

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will begin nightly lane closures on southbound Route 15 starting March 1, 2026, for a guiderail and attenuator safety upgrade project spanning Hamden, North Haven, and New Haven.

The right lane of the Wilbur Cross Parkway will be closed each night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Exit 58A and Exit 46, according to a CTDOT construction advisory. The work is scheduled to continue through Friday, April 17, 2026, giving crews roughly seven weeks to complete the installations.

No full highway closures are planned. State troopers will be present in the work zone to guide motorists through the affected area, according to the CTDOT advisory.

What Commuters Should Expect

Drivers who use southbound Route 15 during overnight hours should expect right lane closures, reduced speeds, and traffic control signage throughout the work zone. CTDOT is using electronic message boards to alert motorists in advance of the construction area.

The agency advises drivers to allow extra travel time and to maintain safe speeds when passing through the corridor. While the closures are limited to overnight hours, delays may occur during the transition periods around 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. when lanes are being set up or reopened.

CTDOT noted that modifications or extensions to the schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions, according to the CTDOT project advisory.

Project Scope and Route Context

The project covers a roughly 12-exit stretch of southbound Route 15, also known as the Wilbur Cross Parkway in this section, running through three municipalities. Exit 58A is located in Wallingford near the North Haven town line, and Exit 46 is in western New Haven near the Woodbridge town line.

The upgrades focus on guiderails and attenuators, which are the metal barriers and impact-absorbing devices installed at highway exit ramps, bridge abutments, and median dividers to reduce the severity of crashes. Replacing aging or damaged guiderail systems is a routine but critical part of highway maintenance, particularly on older parkways like Route 15 that carry high traffic volumes.

Route 15 is a major commuter corridor connecting the New Haven area to communities north through Hamden, North Haven, Wallingford, and beyond to Meriden and Hartford. The parkway sees heavy use during weekday rush hours, and it also serves as an alternative to Interstate 91 for drivers traveling between New Haven County towns. The overnight construction schedule is designed to minimize disruption to peak commuting periods, though drivers making late-night or early-morning trips through the corridor should plan for single-lane travel in the southbound direction for the duration of the project.

Continuation of Route 15 Safety Work

The March project follows a similar CTDOT guiderail and attenuator installation that was completed in January 2026 on Route 15 in North Haven and Wallingford, according to a CTDOT construction advisory. That project, identified as DOT01730544CN, covered a separate section of the parkway and ran from late October 2025 through January 2026.

The back-to-back projects suggest CTDOT is working through a phased program of safety improvements along the Route 15 corridor, addressing different sections in sequence to limit the impact on traffic.

Separately, CTDOT is also developing plans for a more significant improvement at Route 15's Exit 61 interchange at Whitney Avenue in Hamden and North Haven. That project would involve removing stop signs and adding acceleration and deceleration lanes to allow traffic to safely reach freeway speeds, along with potential removal of the southbound Exit 61 off-ramp and installation of traffic signals on Whitney Avenue, according to CTDOT project documents. A timeline for that project has not been announced.
