Cherry Blossom Festival Set for April 19 in New Haven

The 2026 New Haven Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Wooster Square Park, according to the Historic Wooster Square Association. The annual event celebrates the park's 72 Yoshino Japanese cherry blossom trees and regularly draws more than 10,000 visitors.

The festival features live entertainment, more than a dozen local food vendors, and family activities organized by institutions including the Yale Peabody Museum, New Haven Museum, and Eli Whitney Museum. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs.

The event is sponsored by the Historic Wooster Square Association and the Wooster Square Conservancy, with support from the City of New Haven Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism and local businesses.

A Top Cherry Blossom Destination

Wooster Square Park's cherry trees have been ranked by National Geographic as one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the United States. The 72 Yoshino cherry trees were planted in 1973 by the New Haven Historic Commission in collaboration with the New Haven Parks Department and neighborhood residents.

The annual festival commemorates that planting and has grown from a modest gathering with a single local band into one of New Haven's largest outdoor events. The celebration fills the park's main pathways, open lawns, and surrounding streets with vendors, performers, and thousands of visitors each spring.

The festival is free and open to the public. No registration or tickets are required.

New Haven's Wooster Square Neighborhood

Wooster Square is one of New Haven's historic neighborhoods, located east of downtown between the Interstate 91 corridor and the harbor. The park at its center has served as a cultural and civic hub for generations, hosting community events, concerts, and gatherings throughout the year.

The neighborhood is known for its Italian-American heritage, with several long-standing Italian restaurants and bakeries lining the surrounding streets. The cherry blossom festival has become one of the signature events that draws visitors from across the region to the neighborhood each spring.

Parking in the Wooster Square neighborhood is limited, especially during large events. Festival organizers encourage the use of nearby public parking and alternative transportation when possible.

2025 Festival Was Canceled Due to Weather

The 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival was canceled due to weather conditions, according to NBC Connecticut. Festival organizers said they were unable to arrange a rain date because the logistics of coordinating food trucks, bands, and children's activity performers for a backup date were not feasible.

The cancellation was the first in recent memory for the festival, which has been held annually for more than 50 years. Organizers said at the time that they looked forward to bringing the event back in 2026.

The 2026 date of April 19 represents a shift from the originally announced date of April 12. The Historic Wooster Square Association updated the date on its website, though no explanation for the change was provided.
