Man Stabbed with Kitchen Knife at New Haven Green Bus Stop; Suspect Sought

A 32-year-old Pennsylvania man was stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife at a bus stop on the New Haven Green on Monday afternoon, March 10, 2026, sustaining life-threatening injuries that were later upgraded to stable condition, according to New Haven Police.

The attack took place at approximately 5:10 p.m. at a Chapel Street bus stop between Church Street and Temple Street, in the heart of downtown New Haven. The victim encountered a male known to him from prior altercations, and the suspect drew a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim several times before fleeing the area on foot.

Officers responded and the victim was transported by emergency services to Yale New Haven Hospital. His condition was subsequently upgraded from life-threatening to stable.

Person of Interest Identified, No Arrests Made

The victim provided the name of a suspect to responding officers. Acting Police Chief David Zannelli confirmed that investigators have identified a person of interest and that the investigation is active. As of March 11, no arrests had been made and the suspect remained at large.

Police have not released a public description of the person of interest. The nature and history of the relationship between the victim and suspect were not detailed in police releases, beyond confirmation of prior altercations.

Location: New Haven Green

The New Haven Green is one of the city's most prominent public spaces — a large downtown park bordered by Yale University buildings, City Hall, and historic churches along the Green's eastern side. The surrounding streets, including Chapel and Church, serve as a central hub for New Haven's public transit network and are heavily traveled during afternoon commuting hours.

The bus stop where the attack occurred sits at the western edge of the Green. The stabbing unfolded in one of the most visible and publicly trafficked parts of the city during a busy weekday afternoon.

Acting Chief Zannelli and NHPD Context

Zannelli has served as acting chief of the New Haven Police Department since January 2026, when Mayor Justin Elicker appointed him following the departure of former Police Chief Karl Jacobson. Jacobson was arrested in February 2026 and charged with stealing more than $80,000 from the department's confidential informant fund between January 2024 and January 2026.

In the weeks since taking over, Zannelli has publicly reported on the department's progress on violent crime cases. In a March 11 statement addressing broader city violence trends, he noted that New Haven police had made arrests in four of the five shooting cases recorded in 2026.

Investigation Continues

Police are asking anyone with information about the stabbing or the suspect's whereabouts to contact the New Haven Police Department. The department accepts anonymous tips.

The victim's name was not publicly released. He is a Pennsylvania resident; police did not specify the circumstances of why he was in New Haven at the time of the attack.
