About the Community Dining Room
The Community Dining Room is a private, nonprofit organization that serves the south-central Connecticut shoreline from East Haven to Old Saybrook. The organization accepts no state or federal funding, operating entirely on donations from individuals, community groups, and local businesses.
In addition to its daily hot lunch program — served every day of the year — the organization provides approximately 4,500 meals per month through home delivery services for homebound, elderly, and ill residents in Branford and North Branford. In a recent year, the organization delivered more than 25,700 meals to homebound individuals.
The East Haven breakfast series marks an expansion of that mission beyond the organization's primary base of operations in Branford.
Why the Overbrook Early Learning Center
The Overbrook Early Learning Center is a public preschool facility operated by the East Haven Public Schools. The building serves children in early childhood programs during the school year, making its Saturday availability well-suited for community programming.
Community organizations using school facilities for weekend programming is common across Connecticut, particularly for food-access initiatives targeting families with young children. Placing a free breakfast program at an early childhood education center allows the event to reach parents and caregivers who may already be familiar with the site.
Food Insecurity on Connecticut's Shoreline
The expansion of the Community Dining Room's programming into East Haven reflects a continuing need for food-access services in towns along the New Haven County shoreline. East Haven, a town of roughly 28,000 residents bordering New Haven to the east, has a significant working-class population, and community meal programs serve both food-insecure residents and those who benefit from the social connection that shared meals provide.
The Community Dining Room's model — free meals available to all without means-testing or registration — is designed to reduce the stigma associated with food assistance and encourage broader community participation.
