Third-grade classes are visiting library branches for 90-minute literacy sessions, and families can now sign students up for library cards during school enrollment.
Bridgeport Public Schools and the Bridgeport Public Library marked the expansion of their literacy partnership on March 12, 2026, during a "Read Aloud Day" celebration that highlighted new programs designed to connect students with books and library resources at an early age.
The expanded initiative includes organized library visits for all third-grade classes and a new option for families to register children for Bridgeport Public Library cards during the student enrollment process at the Central Registration Enrollment Center at CT State Housatonic.
Third-Grade Library Visits Across Bridgeport Branches
As part of the partnership, all Bridgeport Public Schools third-grade classes visit their nearest library branch during March for 90-minute literacy sessions. The visits include story time, hands-on crafts, a library orientation, and a chance for students to check out books to take home. Transportation for the visits is provided by the Friends of the Bridgeport Public Library.
City Librarian Elaine Braithwaite said the program reflects the library's core mission. "Connecting children with books, activities, resources, and a lifelong love of reading is central to our mission," Braithwaite said.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery, who has led Bridgeport Public Schools since his appointment in November 2025, framed the library partnership as an extension of classroom learning. "Reading is the foundation of strong academics," Avery said.
Library Card Registration Integrated Into Enrollment
Families enrolling students at Bridgeport Public Schools can now apply for Bridgeport Public Library cards as part of the registration process. Library staff are also distributing card applications to parents through the district.
The approach lowers a practical barrier for families who may not visit a library branch independently — ensuring more students have access to library collections, digital resources, and programming from the start of their school careers.
Broader Context: Literacy Challenges in Bridgeport
Bridgeport, Connecticut's most populous city, has long faced literacy challenges common to urban school districts, including limited access to books outside of school and reading scores that trail statewide averages. Partnership programs like this one seek to extend learning resources beyond the school building without requiring significant new funding from either institution.
A March 23, 2026 opinion piece in CT Mirror, titled "Strong CT schools require strong partnerships," highlighted the role of community organizations in supporting educational equity in Bridgeport, naming collective impact initiatives as a growing force in the city's school support ecosystem.
The Read Aloud Day celebration served as both a program launch and a public recognition of the collaboration between two of Bridgeport's major civic institutions.
Partnership Builds on Existing Library-School Ties
Bridgeport Public Library has maintained informal ties with the city's school system for years. The new phase of the partnership formalizes those connections by embedding library access into the school calendar and the enrollment process — two touch points that reach families who might not otherwise connect with library programming.
Braithwaite, who has testified before the Connecticut General Assembly on behalf of library funding, has advocated for public libraries as essential educational infrastructure beyond their traditional role. Her collaboration with Avery's administration reflects a shared institutional commitment to expanding access for students across Bridgeport's 20,000-student district.
No funding figures or outcome metrics for the expanded program were released by either Bridgeport Public Schools or the Bridgeport Public Library as of March 2026.
