Bridgeport Board to Vote on Old Bassick High School Building
The Bridgeport Board of Education will vote on the decommissioning of the former Bassick High School building at its meeting on February 23, 2026. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at the district's administrative offices.
The vote comes six months after Bassick students moved into a brand-new, $129 million facility on the University of Bridgeport campus. The new school opened on August 27, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Mayor Joe Ganim and Interim Superintendent Royce Avery.
The decommissioning item is listed as an action item on the meeting agenda, meaning the board is prepared to take a formal vote rather than simply discuss the matter.
The New Bassick High School
The new Bassick High School is a 205,000-square-foot, LEED Silver-certified building located at 205 Broad Street on the University of Bridgeport campus. The facility has the capacity to house 1,250 students from Bridgeport's West End and South End communities.
The school features 48 teaching classrooms and labs. Bismark Construction managed the project, which broke ground in 2023 and was completed ahead of the fall 2025 school year.
The building was constructed on the site of two former 100,000-square-foot dormitories on the University of Bridgeport campus. The school has been described by city officials as a "crown jewel" of the district's facilities investment.
What Decommissioning Means
Decommissioning the old Bassick High School building means the district would formally cease operations at the former location and remove it from its active facilities portfolio. The board's Ad-Hoc Facilities Master Plan and Bassick Decommissioning Committee has been meeting to work through the details of the transition.
The committee held a meeting on February 19, 2026, at City Hall, Conference Room 305, at 45 Lyon Terrace. The agenda for that session specifically addressed the decommissioning process.
Because students are already attending classes at the new building, the vote does not involve displacing students or reassigning them to other schools. It is a facilities decision about the old structure.
Other Items on the February 23 Agenda
The board will also vote on new library policies and revised board by-laws during the same meeting. Minutes from the February 9, 2026, meeting are scheduled for approval.
The meeting takes place on February 23, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgeport Board of Education's administrative offices. The agenda and supporting materials can be accessed through the district's BoardBook page.
