The annual Shoreline Law Enforcement Diaper Drive benefits Bare Necessities, Inc., the shoreline's only recognized diaper bank
Branford Police Collect Nearly 5,000 Diapers and Wipes for Shoreline Families in Need
The Branford Police Department collected nearly 5,000 diapers and wipes during the annual Shoreline Law Enforcement Diaper Drive in early March 2026, channeling community donations to local families struggling to afford essential baby supplies.
The drive, conducted in partnership with Bare Necessities, Inc., ran through the first weeks of March with community members dropping off donations directly at participating police departments along the Connecticut shoreline.
Multi-Agency Initiative Spans Shoreline Communities
The Shoreline Law Enforcement Diaper Drive is a cooperative effort among multiple law enforcement agencies from Old Saybrook to East Haven. Participating departments have included the Connecticut State Police Troop F in Westbrook, the Clinton Police Department, Madison Police Department, Guilford Police Department, Branford Police Department, North Branford Police Department, and the East Haven Police Department.
The collaborative approach reflects a broader philosophy — using law enforcement agencies as trusted, accessible community hubs to connect residents with charitable efforts. Residents donated by dropping off items at their local station or by ordering diapers and wipes online and having them shipped directly to participating departments.
Bare Necessities, Inc.: The Shoreline's Only Diaper Bank
Donations from the drive went to Bare Necessities, Inc., the only recognized diaper bank on the Connecticut shoreline and a member of the National Diaper Bank Network. The organization distributes diapers and wipes through partnerships with social service agencies and food pantries, reaching families from Old Saybrook to East Haven.
Bare Necessities describes its mission as eliminating diaper need in the shoreline community. Diaper need — the inability to afford an adequate supply of diapers — is a documented form of material hardship that affects families across income levels, particularly those who fall above the income threshold for public assistance but still struggle to cover the cost of essentials.
Diapers are not covered by federal nutrition assistance programs like SNAP or WIC, leaving many families without a safety net for one of the most fundamental newborn necessities. Community donation drives like the law enforcement effort in Branford help fill that gap.
Long-Running Community Tradition
The Shoreline Law Enforcement Diaper Drive has run annually for more than a decade, building momentum with each successive year. In 2022, all participating departments combined collected more than 32,000 diapers, nearly 25,000 baby wipes, and approximately $3,000 in cash donations — described at the time as the drive's most successful year.
The 2026 drive focused on the Branford contribution, collecting nearly 5,000 items and continuing the department's tradition of community engagement beyond law enforcement duties. Supplies were distributed directly to local caregivers through Bare Necessities' network of partner agencies.
Branford Department Highlights Community Role
For the Branford Police Department, the diaper drive represents one of several community-facing programs the department participates in throughout the year. Charitable initiatives like this one allow law enforcement agencies to engage positively with residents outside of emergency response contexts, building relationships with families across the community.
The drive's success each year depends entirely on community participation — residents who purchase and donate supplies from local stores or online retailers before the campaign closes.
Bare Necessities, Inc. is based on the Connecticut shoreline and distributes supplies year-round, not only during the annual law enforcement drive. Families seeking assistance or wishing to donate outside of the drive period can contact the organization through its website at barenecessitiesct.org.
